Where does all your precious time go?

Tuesday, June 23, 2015

The average person has a life expectancy of 78,6 years, that is 943,2 months, about 4 101,14 weeks and, ultimately, 688 992,8 hours. This seems like a large number but where do all our hours go? Why does it constantly feel like we don’t have enough time to get around to doing all the things we need to do? Based on the above mentioned life expectancy, here is an interesting breakdown on how we spend our time:

  1. 25 years: Sleeping
Hitting that snooze button sure has an effect on the clock. The average person sleeps about 31% of his or her life away.

  2. 9.1 years: Watching television
It’s surprising that we don’t all have square eyes by now. We spend a lot of time in front of the tube, but did you know that almost a quarter of the total time we spend watching television is spent on commercials?

  3. 1.5 years: In the bathroom
Rub-a-dub-dub, we sure like to scrub. The average person spends 1.5 years behind closed doors, getting fresh and clean.

  4. 2000 times p/year: Dreaming
So we already know that we spend 25 years sleeping, during these 25 years we dream about 50 000 times we, however, only remember 20% of our dreams.

  5. 1.5 years: Women doing their hair
No pain, no gain. Women spend the same amount of time in doing their hairdos than men spend in the bathroom in their lifetimes.

  6. 1 year: Men stare at women
Before you judge women for spending so much time on their hair, know that men spend almost the same amount of time staring at women. So, those 1.5 years spent on hairspray and blow drying is clearly working.

  7. 92 days: Spent on the toilet
When you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go and people apparently go for an average of 92 days in total.

  8. 3,66 years: Eating
We spend 1 336.7 days eating, whether it be pigging out on vetkoek or mom’s famous milktart.

We clearly spend a lot of our life on essentials like eating and sleeping but what about essential things like spending time with our families? In modern times family time seems to be getting less and less.

Spend less time on personal administration like sorting out your insurance and spend more time on the things you love.
