Tips for an easy breezy easter break

Motoring Travel March 20, 2026

Ah, the easter holidays are around the corner and autumn is in the air. This makes it easy to ‘pack light’ as there’s little need for heavy coats and boots. Take the load off your car with our smart packing hacks. Plus, take a load off your mind, with our pre-holiday hacks – from home security checks to tyre-pressure tests. Let’s get started!

Smart packing hacks

  • Pack with layering in mind. T-shirts, shorts and light-weight pants for daytime and a jersey or light jacket for evenings. We’re no fashion experts but neutral tones seem like a good idea for easy mixing and matching.

  • Add comfy walking shoes, sandals and swimwear, depending on your destination.

  • Doing a little laundry on holiday will also limit the amount you need to pack.

  • The South African sun is never to be underestimated so make sure you’ve got hats, sunblock and after-sun. Mosquito repellent and bug sprays should be packed too.

  • Don’t forget a first aid kit, any prescription medication and other essentials like pain relief or anti-nausea tablets.

Make sure the valuables you take with you (like your phone, tablet, golf clubs, bicycles etc.) are covered. If you don’t have cover for these, check out our portable possessions cover now

Before you leave home hacks

  • Ensure that your home and the valuables inside it are properly covered.

  • Login online to ensure your cover and details are up to date and ensure your premiums are paid.

  • Check that all doors are locked and windows are closed. Ensure your security systems are working and activated. Check that backup systems are functional too in case of a power outage.

  • Make sure your backup power systems like generators and inverters are working.

  • Leave spare house keys and security access codes, with a trusted neighbour or family in case emergency access is needed.

  • Check your geyser pressure to prevent leaking or bursting while you’re away.

  • Unplug unused devices, electronics and appliances.

  • Ensure there are no valuable items clearly visible from windows.

If you don’t have buildings insurance or home contents insurance, now is a good time to consider it.

Hitting the road hacks

  • Login online to check that your vehicle insurance is correct and up to date.

  • Ensure your drivers licence and car licence disc are valid

  • Check tyre pressure and tread on all four tyres, plus the spare.

  • Check that your brakes are in working order.

  • Top up things like engine oil, water coolant and brake fluid

  • Ensure your lights and wipers are working properly.

  • Test your battery, check for corrosion and clean terminals.

  • Make sure your tank is full, especially when heading into rural areas.

  • Don’t overload your car with baggage or people.

  • Take regular breaks if you’re travelling long distance

  • Pack a safety kit including a warning triangle, high-visibility vest, fire extinguisher and some basic tools.

All that’s left to do now is relax and enjoy your Easter break. Here’s to safe travels and super memories!
