Plants bring a special atmosphere to the home that no amount of expensive ornaments or fancy furnishings can. They make a modern home less austere and clinical without sacrificing the uncluttered, more minimalist look.
We selected plants that can thrive indoors despite a home owner’s lack of green fingers. In fact, the less attention you give them, the better. There’s only one rule to remember: Do not over water!
Indigenous, easy to grow, and to propagate, there are dozens of types of aloe species to choose from.
Needs: Well-draining cactus potting mix. Water when dry.
Position: Filtered sun to sunny.
Jade plants are hardy and they well indoors, even with limited light and water. Their thick and woody stems give them a tree-like appearance, making them a great ornamental plant for small living spaces.
Needs: Well-draining soil. Water when dry.
Position: Begin filtered sun for four weeks before moving to a sunnier position.
This must be the plant on every ‘best house plant’ list out there. Maybe it’s because it earned the title of NASA-approved air purifier, or maybe it’s because they truly are so easy to care for.
Needs: Well-draining soil. Water only once soil has dried out.
Position: Shade to sun
Almost indestructible, these trailing vines are perfect for hanging baskets. They’ll even grow in a vase of water if you’re so inclined. They’re so adaptable and unfussy that you can use basically any soil and place it low light or bright light.
Needs: Water when you remember.
Position: Like bright light but will tolerate low light.
Warning: Toxic to cats and dogs.
Although you can keep a small rubber plant, this is a good choice if you’re looking for a larger floor-standing plant as they can grow to great heights. The big shiny leaves lend a tropical setting to your home.
Needs: Well-draining soil. Allow soil to dry out before watering.
Position: Medium to bright light
The Zanzibar Gem, Zuzu Plant, Emerald Palm, Fortune Tree, or Eternity Plant is another good air-purifier. It’s up there with sanseveria (mother-in-law’s tongue) as being one of the hardiest house plants and thrives on neglect.
Needs: Well-draining soil. Allow top 5-10 cm of soil to dry out before watering.
Position: Low to bright indirect light.
Bring the outdoors in by adding some lushness to your home. Keep it that way by remembering one thing about these plants: the main cause of death is overwatering!
