4 easy winter holiday ideas

Winter means something different to everyone. For some, it’s a time for family snuggles and sipping hot chocolate indoors on dim afternoons. For others, it’s the season for beating a hasty retreat out of bed into your warmest clothes and arriving at work before the sun has risen.

However you feel about winter, we thought we’d make it easier to get into the cold weather by giving you some holiday ideas. What better way to turn a miserable day or a cold night into an enjoyable experience than to go away with your loved ones?

Start your winter vacation planning early with these easy ideas:

Take a drive

Driving doesn’t need to be that part of the journey you try to get over and done with as quickly as possible; make the drive a part of the holiday and take a road trip. We’re lucky to live in South Africa where we’ve got cerulean seas, peaceful bush, resplendent mountains, and sleepy winelands. There is so much to take in that a road trip in any of our provinces will give you the chance to explore the country like you never have before. And because it’s off-peak season, the roads will be quieter and you’re certain to have a restful vacation.

If you are planning to take a road trip, a trailer will make your journey much more comfortable because you’ll be able to fit all of your necessities in easily. Even better is taking a caravan if you’ve got one. If you do go this route, remember to take out trailer and caravan insurance so that you can enjoy the break without stress.

Take to the skies

Winter time can be incredibly romantic for couples, especially if your only other companions are the stars. One of the best places to do this is in Sutherland, a small town in the Karoo, where the South African Astronomical Observatory houses the biggest single optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. The skies are incredibly clear, which means that you’ll be able to see more of the night sky than you ever have before.

Sutherland also gets yearly snowfall, so if your family wants to experience a white winter, this is a good option.[1]

Pitch a tent

Picture yourself clutching a blanket around a roaring fire, listening to the sounds of the bush while enjoying easy laughs with your family. Can you think of a better way to chase away the winter blues? For many South Africans, the inside of a tent is a home away from home no matter where it’s pitched.

South Africa has countless campsites of varying quality depending on what you’re after. If you’re looking for a rustic getaway, then a non-electrified site at Pilanesberg Game Reserve will do just fine. If you want to relax in utter style, go glamping – glamorous camping. Marataba Safari Lodge offers guests luxurious accommodation from R6 100 per person per night[2], but there are loads of glamping sites all around South Africa if you want something a little more affordable.

Winter wonderland

One unusual but oh-so-convenient thing about South Africa is that there is another country almost within the centre of ours – Lesotho – and it’s the place to go if you want to enjoy skiing during a winter getaway. So if your family loves adventure, this one’s for you; embrace the cold weather and enjoy the outdoors.

While you’re there, make the most of your trip and enjoy the numerous other activities on offer, including visiting the various nature reserves and viewing the Maletsunyane Waterfalls.[3]
