Vehicle anti theft devices

Car owners shouldn’t underestimate the value and benefit of vehicle anti-theft devices. Car security systems – from the simple gear lock to more sophisticated immobilising and tracking devices – are a deterrent for criminals and lower the risk of theft.

“Vehicle anti-theft devices can stop the amateur thief and slow down the work of professionals. Criminals tend to prey on cars that present the least amount of hassle. The longer it takes to steal a car, and the more attention a thief draws to himself in the process, the less likely he is to try,” says Bradley Du Chenne, spokesperson for Dial Direct Insurance

Research by Business Against Crime shows that vehicle anti-theft devices play a major role in lowering the risk profile and overall theft incidence of a car model range. The better and more sophisticated the security measures employed, the lower the risk profile of the car. This effect is evident in entry-level models which are typically fitted with low-level anti-theft devices to save costs. These cheaper, entry-level cars usually have very high theft rates, regardless of their age.

There are numerous electronic security measures and anti-theft devices available on the market today. Visible and audible devices that alert thieves that your car is protected include:

  • Alarms.
  • Steering wheel locks.
  • Gear locks.
  • Wheel locks.
  • Laminated windows (to protect against smash and grabs).

Then there are sophisticated immobilising devices, chips and smart keys which make it more difficult for thieves to bypass the ignition and start the car. Tracking devices are highly-effective in protecting against theft and hijacking, and for assisting in the recovery of your stolen car.

The type of car you drive, the risk profile of the area where you live and work, your personal preferences and your budget will determine which anti-theft devices you use.

Dial Direct advises car owners to install the very best vehicle security measures they can afford

The more anti-theft and protection measures you employ, the more difficult it will be to steal and the less attractive it is for criminals. Another good reason to install vehicle security is that many car insurers now refuse to insure vehicles that do not have adequate anti-theft measures. Vehicle insurance is the last level of protection you have against the financial implications of a loss, and is undoubtedly a must-have given the high rate of vehicle theft in this country.

Most insurers offer policyholders discounts on their monthly insurance premiums if they install an approved anti-theft device. Policyholders must check with their insurance provider that the anti-theft system fitted in their car is approved by the Motor Vehicle Association of South Africa.”
